上智大学卒業後、旅行会社に就職し営業・企画・手配・添乗業務に従事。
主にインド・ブータン・チベット・パキスタン・バングラデシュ等の地域を担当。 海外と日本を往復する生活を送り、2011年に映画監督を目指し退職。
2012年から1年間映画製作を学び、2013年からフリーランスで活動を開始。
第10回シネアスト・オーガニゼーション・大阪(CO2)に助成企画が通過し、
大阪市の助成金を元にして初長編「僕はもうすぐ十一歳になる。」を監督。2014年に劇場公開され、国内主要都市や海外の映画祭でも好評を得る。
また、この映画がきっかけで2014年度第55回日本映画監督協会新人賞にノミネートされる。
2015年、名古屋シネマスコーレがプロデュースするオムニバス映画 "Filmusic in 中川運河" の一篇として短編『せんそうはしらない』を監督。
名古屋シネマスコーレでの1ヶ月の劇場公開のほか、国内外の映画祭で上映された。
その映画祭の内の一つ、イラン・イスファハーン国際児童青少年映画祭で出会ったイラン映画人から合作長編 "On the Zero Line" のオファーを後に受ける。
2016年、第一子の誕生を機に福岡に転居。
福岡で開催された「天神・アピチャッポンプロジェクト」でアピチャッポン・ウィーラセタクンに、ベトナムで毎年開催されているAutumn Meetingでトラン・アン・ユンに指導を受ける。
2017年、韓国・釜山でレジデンス制作のため現地に3週間滞在。オール韓国語、韓国人スタッフ・キャストで短編『憧れ』を監督。
さらに同年、そこで出会ったスタッフを福岡に招き、直方映画祭プロデュース短編『えんえんと、えんえんと』を監督。
その後、2018年 イラン・シンガポールとの合作長編『0ライン―赤道の上で』の制作を開始、2019年から2020年にかけてはフードロスがテーマの長編ドキュメンタリー『もったいないキッチン』（日本・オーストリア合作）の編集を手掛けるなど、海外との合作映画を中心に手掛けるようになる。
2024年6月より『0ライン―赤道の上で』を含む全作品の特集上映『生活の中の映画』を全国展開開始（2025年7月時点で継続中）。上映地に居住して形成されたつながりや出会いそのものも「映画」と呼ぶ考え方を広めながら、上映活動を続けている。
その他、韓国・プチョン映画祭主催の若手映画人育成ワークショップ・Fantastic Film School(2016年)、京都ヒストリカ映画祭主催のフィルムメイカーズラボ(2017年)、東京FILMeX主催のTalents Tokyo(2018年)、ベルリン国際映画祭主催のベルリナーレ・タレンツ(2021年)に参加するなど、国内外のネットワークを広げている。また、アジアフォーカス福岡国際映画祭のプログラマーと福岡市総合図書館映像ホール・シネラ実行委員会ブログラム部会委員に就任、福岡建築ファウンデーションに加入、福岡県宗像市のコミュニティ・ハブ「ひのさと48」にアドバイザリーとして参画、企業と連携して子ども向けの映画・デザインワークショップを開催するなど、分野を横断して知見を深めている。 福岡と出身地の東京、二箇所を拠点に活動中。

Yoshimasa Jimbo (Screenwriter/Film Director/Editor)
Born in 1986 in Tokyo, Japan. Based in Tokyo and Fukuoka.
Until 2011, he traveled overseas a lot as a travel agency employee, but quit his job to be a filmmaker.Started the life as a film director in 2013, he directed his first feature film “I’m Ten, then I’ll Catch Eleven”. It was granted by the Osaka city government, screened in the country and overseas, and nominated for the new director award of Directors Guild of Japan in 2014. In 2016, he moved from his hometown Tokyo to Fukuoka to broaden his network with the other Asian countries and childrearing. His short film "The Girl Who Never Knew War” (2015) screened world-wide including 30th Isfahan International Festival of Films for Children & Young Adults in Iran. He participated in Autumn Meeting, an annual cinema program founded by Phan Dang Di, joined the directing workshop by Tran Anh Hung and strengthened his network with other young talents in Asia.
In 2017, He created “Here and Here” as a part of the Residency Film Production in Busan.
It strengthened his network with Busan filmmakers and eventually he directed "Here and Elsewhere, On and On” (2017) in Japan with them. After that, invited by an Iranian filmmaker in 2018, the production of the feature film "On the Zero Line" started.
From 2019 to 2020, he edited the feature documentary film "Mottainai Kitchen". The topic of the film is the food waste problems in Japan.
Thus, his main field has been gradually shifted to international co-production filmmaking.
From June 2024, a nationwide roll-out of “Cinema in Life”, a special screening of all films, including “On the Zero Line”, began (ongoing as of July 2025). The project continues its screening activities while promoting the idea that the connections and encounters formed by living in the screening locations themselves are also “films”.
He broadens his network internationally by participating in several workshop programmes such as Fantastic Film School 2016 (organised by BiFan), Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2017 (organised by Kyoto Historica Film festival), Talents Tokyo 2018(organised by Tokyo FILMeX) and Berlinale Talents 2021 (organised by Berlin International Film Festival).
In addition to that, he has deepened his knowledge and experience by joining the program team of Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival and Fukuoka Architecture Foundation.
